We trust nursing homes to provide for the care and protection of the people we love. Long term care facilities are supposed to provide skilled nursing care to the disabled and elderly. However, the quality of care in the industry can be inadequate and residents can suffer neglect or abuse from employees of the companies that own these facilities. In many cases, residents have died or suffered serious injury as a result of neglect or intentional abuse. The residents of nursing homes tend to be especially vulnerable and many times the staff of these facilities fail to meet their basic needs. There are over 2.6 million Americans residing in a nursing home. According to recent statistics, 81% of nursing home staff report having seen some form of verbal, physical, or other abuse in the last year. The quality of life provided for these individuals is frequently inadequate and can result in injuries due to elder neglect. The major types of elder abuse and neglect are physical abuse (inappropriate use of drugs, unreasonable physical restraints, assault, and battery), psychological abuse (verbal abuse, forced isolation), sexual abuse, neglect (abandonment, improper monitoring, failure to properly hydrate, malnutrition, and bed sores), and financial exploitation. If any person (including facility staff, volunteers, family, visitors, or residents) neglect or abuse an individual resident they are in violation of both the laws of Alabama and Federal law. If you suspect that such abuse or neglect is occurring or you are experiencing such things then it is important to report the allegation to prevent further suffering by residents. You should make a report to the nursing home administration, local police, or a citizen advocacy group. The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) collects information about instances of nursing home abuse and is an example of such a citizen advocacy group. Many nursing homes are understaffed and unable to care properly for their residents. Also, nursing homes tend to be owned by very large corporations that can be more interested in making a profit than patient care. If you, or a family member, have been the victim of neglect or abuse by a long term care facility or nursing home then call our Alabama nursing home abuse lawyers today for a consultation.
